Our Daily BreadOur Daily Bread by Lauren B. Davis

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Our Daily Bread is the kind of book that gathers you up and sweeps you immediately into it's characters, places and situations. Even when those situations are ones you would rather look away from. Lauren B Davis' spare evocative writing paints searing, vivid pictures.

This is a story of differences and the justifications we all use to ignore such differences. It is a story about the need to be seen, heard and protected. It is also a story about unlikely friendships and the profound effects they can have on the individual and the community. While this is a dark story about dark places it has moments of humour and grace and surprise.

Our Daily Bread has characters that you root for, characters that you hate and characters that leave you wondering why and what if. I found myself heavily invested in more than one of these folk.

I could not put this book down. The last few chapters crackle along at a breath taking pace leaving sounds and images and characters that stayed with me for a long time.
